A handful of Searsport students headed to college on Saturday, Oct. 13, but it was not to take classes to work to a degree, but to compete in athletics.

The Vikings were among the high school cross-country runners who converged on the University of Maine to participate in the Penobscot Valley Conference championships.

Searsport compete in the Class C portion of the meet.

The Class B competition included 55 girls and 62 boys. The Class C competition had 37 girls and 64 boys.

In the Class B girls race, Ellsworth's Caitlin MacPherson won in 20:17.3. In the boys competition, Washington Academy of East Machias' Matyas Nachtiagall finished first in 17:03.6.

In the Class C girls race, Orono's Erin Gerbi won the competition in 20:09.2. The first Viking girl to cross the course was Hailey Wood in 25:00.6 for 19th.

In the Class C boys race, Sumner of Sullivan's Luke Barnes won in 17:57.0. The first Viking boy to finish was Steven Courtney in 23:51.0 for 48th.

The Class B girls team scores were: Mount Desert Island 32, Caribou 75, John Bapst of Bangor 82, Presque Isle 102, OId Town 136, Hermon 138, Washington Academy 150 and Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft 203.

The Class C girls team scores were; Orono 15, George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill 68, Houlton 71, Narraguagus of Harington 87, Machias 122 and Searsport no score

The Class B boys team scores were: Hermon 40, Caribou 42, Mount Desert Island 94, Ellsworth 106, Old Town 143, Presque Isle 160, John Bapst 186, Foxcroft Academy 203 and Washington Academy 216.

The Class C boys team scores were: Orono 20, George Stevens Academy 40, Calais 112, Houlton 133, Bucksport 145, Lee Academy 151, Central of East Corinth 166, Machias 200, Searsport 219, Sumner, Deer Isle-Stonington, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln, Dexter and Central no score.

The individual Viking girls results were — 19, Wood, 25:00.6; and 30, Emma Gaecklein, 30:32.2.

The individual Viking boys results were — 48, Courtney, 23:51.0; 49, Thomas Bradley, 24:07.6; 50, Ellis Braga, 24:12.4; 55, Andrew Donald, 26:07.1; 59, Caleb Fairbrother, 29:02.5; and 62, William Bradley, 31:31.7.
