Honor Flight Maine ‘Welcome Home’

On Sunday, Oct. 28, at 11:15 a.m., Honor Flight Maine will return from its weekend trip to Washington, D.C., with 44 World War II and Korea veterans and their guardians.  Everyone is encouraged to come to the Portland Jetport to welcome home our veterans who have served our country to protect our freedoms and give them the welcome home they never received.

Free parking and free shuttle service are available at 151 Jetport Blvd. at the State of Maine Building. Once at the Jetport, enter at the first floor ticketing area. Please bring flags and signs to help make this a huge “Welcome Home.”

Veterans' appreciation service

On Sunday, Nov. 4, at 10 a.m., everyone is welcome to attend a special service at Faith Temple Church, 189 Lincolnville Ave. (near Troy Howard Middle School), Belfast. Belfast Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Color Guard will open the service with the presentation of our national colors and U.S. Army Veteran Holly Parker will sing the national anthem. Please join us to honor the men and women who have served and still are serving our country to protect our freedoms.

Veterans' appreciation lunch

The Rotary Club of Portland will honor the men and women who have served our country on Friday, Nov. 9, at noon at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland.  Ceremonies will begin at noon with special guest speakers, retired Maj. Gen. John W. Libby and Capt. Jonathan D. Bratten, military historian.

Preregistration is required. Veterans’ meals are complimentary. All other guests are $25 each and can be paid at the door (cash and checks only). You can register by calling the Portland Rotary at 899-6342 or visiting portlandrotary.org.

Wreaths Across America

Veterans rally, free concert

On Sunday, Dec. 9, the annual Escort to Arlington will begin its journey from Columbia Falls to Arlington National Cemetery for the National Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, Dec. 15. Their mission to Remember, Honor and Teach is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery with those at more than 1,400 other locations in all 50 states, at sea, and abroad.

On Dec. 9 from 2 to 4 p.m., Wreaths Across America has invited everyone to join them at a veterans rally and free concert at the Augusta Civic Center, 76 Community Drive, Augusta. Maine humorist and Vietnam Veteran Gary Crocker will emcee the ceremony, followed by a free concert by the U.S. Army Field Band’s Six String Soldiers.
