South Mountain Road (Route 220) was shut down for about an hour between Peavey Town Road and Halldale, Wednesday morning because of slippery road conditions which led to several cars going off the roadway.

According to Montville Fire Department Public Information Officer Karen York, the situation started around 8 a.m. when a school bus driver reported a car off the road between Center and Berry roads.

Several other cars in a short period of time also went off the roadway, she said, adding "The conditions were just right."

Fire Chief John York decided to close a section of Route 220 to allow sand trucks time to treat the road.

No injuries were reported as a result of the slide-offs, according to York. Montville Fire Department responded and Liberty Ambulance was paged but was not needed.
