Phyllis E. Given of Belfast peacefully passed away at the age of 91, following a short illness, on Dec. 3, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.

At the age of 7, Phyllis and her family moved from Sunbury, Pa., where she was born, to Northfield, Mass. She graduated from Northfield High School and was very active with the youth group at the Trinitarian Congregational Church, which she became a member of. It was in Northfield that her younger brother, Ken, who survives her, became best friends with the "boy next door" Sidney H. Given Jr., who Phyllis fell in love with and married in August 1947.

They decided to continue to make their home in Northfield where they raised eight children. Phyllis was a devoted and loving mother who found time to also care for the children of friends and neighbors. As busy as she was with her own family, Phyllis was a dear friend to many and always willing to help if needed. As her children moved on with their lives, Phyllis found she had time to work part-time as a driver for the Northfield-Mount Hermon schools transporting students to outside appointments — even as far away as Boston.

Upon the death of Sidney in October 1993, Phyllis decided, at the age of 65, to make a dramatic change in her life and moved from her home of 48 years to a place she had always dreamed of — coastal Maine. In December 1993 she made Belfast her new home. Here she was an avid gardener, bird watcher, scrabble-player and volunteered at the local hospital and at the Chamber of Commerce where she loved meeting new people. However, the most important role for her was that of a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren who lived nearby. She very quickly grew to love this beautiful area and the warm, friendly people and was very happy to call it her home right to the end.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney H. Given Jr.; and her eldest son, Martin G. Given; her parents and older brother and sister.

She is survived by her younger brother, H. Kenneth Ruhl of Williamsport, Pa.; her children Gail St. Clair of Searsmont, Gregory Given and wife Karon of Brattleboro, Vt., Douglas Given of Melbourne, Fla., Stephen Given of Jonesborough, Tenn., Katherine Pickering and husband Alan of Belfast, Mark Given and wife Valerie of Northfield, Mass., and Jane Kershaw and husband Geoff of Beaumaris, Australia; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Kidder Funeral Home, Northfield, Mass., on Friday, Dec. 21, at 10 a.m. Burial to follow in spring 2019 in South Parish Cemetery, Winchester, N.H. The family would appreciate donations in her honor to your local humane society or the Audubon Society as a tribute to her love of animals and birds. There are no calling hours.
