It was a tough night on the hardwood for high school basketball teams from Belfast and Mount View on Friday, Dec. 7 as all four squads came up snake eyes in their bids for season-opening wins.

The Lion boys fell 73-54 to Maine Central Institute in Belfast, while the Lion girls lost 51-33 at Pittsfield.

The Mustang boys lost 56-40 to visiting Winslow, while the girls fell to the defending state Class B champion Black Raiders 60-28.

Boys basketball

Winslow 56, Mount View 40

At Thorndike Dec. 7, the Black Raiders pounced on the Mustangs with a lopsided first quarter and emerged victorious over the hosts. Winslow led 20-2, 33-12 and 44-22 at the quarter breaks.

Kyle Noble led Mount View with 13 points, while Declan Knowlton and Neal Kenney added six; Brennan Grant, Draedyn Furrow, Joe Grassi, Garrett Smith, Logan Curtis, Matt Overlock and Damien Doughty, two; and Sean Raven, one.

Justin Laflamme scored 16 points for Winslow, while Kevin Ware added 12; Colby Pomeroy, 11; Isaiah Goldsmith, four and Ethan Lachance, Sebastian York, Marek Widerynski, Jacob Berard and Camden Dangler, two.

The Mustangs were 14-of-26 (54 percent) from the foul line, while the Black Raiders were 11-of-14 (79 percent).

Maine Central Institute 73, Belfast 54

At Belfast Dec. 7, the Lions could not keep pace with the Huskies and were downed by 19 points. MCI led 15-9, 35-18 and 57-35 at the quarter breaks.

Chris Kelley led Belfast with 10 points, while Jason Bartlett, Andrew Akles and Max Lewis added nine; Luke Lightner, seven; Tanner Veilleux, six; and Grady Doolan, four.

Owen Williams, Daniel Garamolgyi and Jaraslav Ruta scored 15 points for MCI, while Hayden Caldwell added 13; Gavin McArther, five; Nacho Montes, four; and Joe Cloutier, three.

The Lions finished 11-of-16 (69 percent) from the free-throw line, while the Huskies were 8-of-14 (57 percent).

Girls basketball

Maine Central Institute 52, Belfast 33

At Pittsfield Dec. 7, the Huskies held the Lions scoreless in the second quarter and prowled to their first win of the season. MCI led 16-12, 28-12 and 37-23 at the quarter breaks.

Kayci Faulkingham scored 13 points for Belfast, while Kiara Doolan added 11; Lillie Mitchell, eight; and Grace Fitzjurls and Madison Farris, one.

Leah Bussell and Christa Carr each netted 16 points in the win for MCI, while Sydney Farrar added 12 and Sara Linkletter, Maria Reed, Danielle Dow and Grace Moore two.

The Lions were 4-of-10 (40 percent) from the foul line, while the Huskies were 5-of-11 (45 percent). MCI hit two three-pointers — both by Farrar — while Faulkingham made the lone trey on the evening for Belfast.

Winslow 60, Mount View 28

At Winslow Dec. 7, the Mustangs could not keep pace with the reigning state champion Black Raiders — the latter of which netted a whopping 13 3-pointers — and fell by a lopsided score.

Hannah Coolen scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Mount View, while Shala Davis (9 points, 8 rebounds), Sage Cassidy (7 points) and Alex Fountain (3 points, 4 rebounds) also chipped in for the visitors.
