Before the Christmas break, the Belfast basketball teams, in addition to the Searsport boys, came up short in their final high school hardwood contests on Saturday, Dec. 22.

The Lions lost at Ellsworth, as the girls were dealt a 53-40 defeat and the boys fell 66-40, while the home-standing Viking boys were doubled up by Penobscot Valley of Howland 48-24.

Girls basketball

Ellsworth 53, Belfast 40

At Ellsworth Dec. 22, the Eagles defended their home court and tamed the Lions. Ellsworth led 15-12, 30-18 and 40-31 at the quarter breaks.

Trinity Montminy poured in 37 points for the winners, while Jocelyn Jordan and Sierra Andrews added three and Ella Hubbard, Kylie Ribidoux, Autumn Paul, Kayla Duhaime and Alicia Kelly, two.

Lillie Mitchell tossed in 17 points for Belfast, while Kiara Doolan added seven; Sydni Moores, six; Hannah Banks, four; and Junne Robertson-McIntire, Kayci Faulkingham and Madison Farris, two.

The Lions were 9-of-12 (75 percent) from the foul line, while the Eagles were 7-of-12 (58 percent).

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Belfast (0-5, no points) is 12th, while Mount Desert Island (5-0, 9.3827 points) is first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Boys basketball

Penobscot Valley 48, Searsport 24

At Searsport Dec. 22, the Howlers went on a 22-4 run in the fourth quarter and doubled up the host Vikings. Penobscot Valley led 12-7, 20-11 and 26-20 at the quarter breaks.

Charlie Spinney scored 10 points for Searsport, while Josh Wright added six; George Dakin and Colby Snow, three; and Isaiah Runci, two.

Elijah Wood scored 11 points for Penobscot Valley, while Reece Carter added nine; Alex Tash, eight; Brad McKechnie, six; Zach Mitchell, five; Grant Kidon, four; and Zach Doore, two.

The Vikings were 1-of-3 (33 percent) from the foul line, while the Howlers were 13-of-21 (62 percent).

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class C North, Searsport (3-2, 3.8966 points) is 11th, while Houlton (5-1, 13.0247 points) is first in the 20-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Ellsworth 66, Belfast 40

At Ellsworth Dec. 22, the Eagles went on the offensive and soared past the Lions. Ellsworth led 19-9, 37-19 and 47-30 at the quarter breaks.

Chris Kelley led Belfast with 11 points, while Wilder Magruder added seven; Jason Bartlett, six; Andrew Akles, five; Tanner Veilleux, Dakota Payson and Tommy Walker, three; and Luke Lightner, two.

Jackson Curtis led Ellsworth with 20 points, while Norman Jodrey added 14; Hunter Curtis, 13; Austin Harris, 10; Devin Grindle, four; Connor Crawford and Darby Barry, three; and Brett Bragdon, Collin Lacasse, Malcolm Svec and Deyan Rich, two.

The Lions were 5-of-10 (50 percent) from the foul line, while the Eagles were 8-of-20 (40 percent).

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Belfast (0-5, no points) is 14th, while Hermon (4-0, 10.3704 points) is first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.
