The 2019 calendar year began with an upward swing for the Searsport girls basketball team as the Vikings netted a 66-46 high school road victory over Sumner of East Sullivan on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

The Vikings pounced on the Tigers quickly and took a 19-6 lead after the first eight minutes and continued to extend that advantage, leading 35-14 at halftime and 43-29 after three quarters.

Sisters Mikaela Alley and Makenzie Alley tossed in 19 points to lead Searsport, while Morgan Ireland added 10; Abby Stemp, eight; Casey Snow and Ashten Wells, three; and Kyle Perkins and Sarah Gent, two.

Sammie Bierman and Skylar Soule scored 10 points for Sumner, while Alexis Hutchins added nine; Emma Bunch, eight; Raquel Barnes, four; Hannah Shorey, three; and Rachel Colby, two.

The Vikings were 18-of-26 (69 percent) from the foul line, while the Tigers were 8-of-21 (38 percent). Searsport hit six treys, four from Mikaela Alley and two by Stemp.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class C North, Searsport (5-2, 9.2593 points) is 12th, while Penobscot Valley (5-2, 19.8148 points) is first in the 20-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs.
