Polar vortex! It's days like these I am thankful I no longer have to drive to Belfast in a skirt with a car that didn't have heat. My dad Charlie, sister Patti, and her family are located just outside Detroit, Michigan, where it's been -30; I guess zero degrees would be downright tropical.

Sad news about the Great Black Hawk that was rescued from Portland and brought to Avian Haven in Freedom with frostbite. A native of Central America with a northern range of Mexico, it was ill-prepared for a Maine winter.

Because of the severity of the frostbite, its feet and legs no longer viable, the heart-wrenching decision was made to euthanize this beautiful creature. Many thanks to Avian Haven for the great work they do caring for our feathered friends.
