Nomination papers are available for four Regional School Unit 3 Board of Directors seats to be filled in the June election. At-large seats representing Brooks, Jackson, Troy and Waldo are up for a vote this year.

Following concerns raised by a Unity resident last year, the state commissioner of education determined RSU 3 representation was not apportioned in accordance with the principle of one-person, one-vote. The board was charged with developing a new apportionment method.

After a two-hour board meeting last April, directors agreed to adopt at-large voting for all members. With this method, each municipality continues to be represented and directors are elected at-large by all of the voters in the regional school unit.

Nomination papers can be picked up at the RSU 3 Central Office, 84 School St., Unity; Brooks Town Office, 15 Purple Heart Highway (Route 139), Brooks; Jackson Town Office, 730 Moosehead Trail, Jackson; Troy Town Office, 129 Rogers Road, Troy; and Waldo Town Office, 629 Waldo Station Road, Waldo.

Candidates must reside in one of the four towns and have the registrar of voters in that town certify their residence prior to collecting signatures. Candidates are asked to pick up nomination papers in person and are required to collect at least 25, and no more than 50, signatures of registered voters in their town to be placed on the ballot.

All nomination papers must be delivered to the registrar of voters in each of the RSU 3 member municipalities where signatures were collected by noon Thursday, March 14, for certification.

Each candidate must deliver the certified nomination papers to the RSU 3 Central Office by 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 21.

Election day is Tuesday, June 11. All district voters may cast ballots for each of the vacant at-large RSU 3 director seats. Contact Kaylene Miller, secretary to the superintendent at 948-6136, ext. 1, or kmiller@rsu3.org, with questions or for more information.
