While the timing of the inclement weekend weather did not necessarily cooperate, 37 runners and walkers shrugged off 33-degree temperatures and snow during their 3.1-mile journeys on Sunday morning, Feb. 24 during the first annual "Heartbreaker" 5-kilometer event at the Samoset Resort.

Keith Drago, 31, of Rockport finished first overall in 18 minutes and 21 seconds, while Jason Bigonia, 42, of Walpole finished second at 18:30.

The first female finisher was Serena Blasius, 17, of Friendship, who crossed the course in 22:33.

Snow had just begun to fall as the group took off at the start and, by the time the leaders had gotten to the midway point, the snow was heavier and the wind had picked up, which made it more difficult to see.

During the event snow accumulated, which made the trek slushy, wet and slippery in spots.

The event was hosted by One Community Many Voices, a non-profit group, and is part of that group's Midcoast Race Series.

One Community Many Voices is a 501(c) (3) charitable organization in Rockland. It uses a model called "The Art of Good Fellowship — Paying it Forward One Neighbor at a Time." OCMV works with Midcoast neighbors to help craft their destinies by providing small boosts that unlock skills and potential … and create possibilities.
