A Morrill man has been charged with murder in connection with an early morning shooting March 15 in Swanville that left a Belfast man dead.

State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said 22-year-old Austin McDevitt of Morrill was arrested on Friday. The shooting, which occurred at a cabin at 568 Oak Hill Road, was reported about 4:45 a.m. Friday. Shane Sauer, 26, of Belfast, was pronounced dead at the scene.

McCausland said a young woman, whom he described as the daughter of the property owner, was there at the time of the shooting. All three knew each other and none of them lived at the property, McCausland said.

A neighbor, who spoke to The Republican Journal Friday morning but did not want to be identified, described calling 911 after hearing a gunshot and screaming coming from the property.

Andrea Walsh is listed on the property deed, according to Town Office personnel, who said Andrea and Robert Walsh are the owners.

A team of State Police detectives has joined sheriff's deputies investigating the circumstances.

McDevitt is expected to appear at the new Maine District Courthouse in Belfast on Monday morning, McCausland said. As of Friday afternoon, the time had not been determined.
