Crews from several fire departments quickly put out a blaze on Wednesday that started to spread to a wooded area behind a house in Thorndike.

A call came in around 4:20 p.m. reporting that an outbuilding was on fire and flames were spreading to nearby woods at 504 E. Thorndike Road.

Safety Officer Lauren Carter with the Thorndike Fire Department said no one was hurt and it was not clear what started the fire. She said the incident was still under investigation.

Carter emphasized the importance of obtaining a burn permit before burning anything outside so that the fire department is aware of your intentions.

“Even though we have gotten some rain, it’s still sort of dry out there,” she said.

Fire Department crews from Freedom, Unity, Thorndike, Jackson, Troy and Montville answered the call.

Maine Forest Service is investigating the incident.
