A planned Route 1 bridge replacement "is permanently on hold," according to City Manager Joseph Slocum.

Maine Department of Transportation intended to replace the Goose River bridge, which crosses Route 1 near Lupine Cottage, later this year. However, construction bids for the project were much higher than originally estimated by Maine DOT, Slocum said.

"There won't be any construction this summer on Route 1, that's good news," he said.

The Goose River bridge was found to be structurally deficient in 2014, according to Stantec engineer Sarah Williams, who presented plans for its replacement during a public hearing earlier this month. While barely recognizable as a bridge to drivers, it may be best-known for its scenic views of a dam spilling into the bay.

Replacement plans called for installation of a two-lane temporary bridge to divert traffic.
