The 2019 spring season saw the Belfast boys tennis team become quite accustomed to victory and success, and, for the most part, convincing victories on the court.

The Lions brought an unblemished record into the Class B North playoffs, and one loss in the single-elimination tournament can send the undefeated second seed home until next year.

With everything on the line, the Lions were cool, calm and relaxed — much like a real king of the jungle — in their playoff match with No. 7 Old Town, and stalked to a 5-0 quarterfinal victory on Thursday, May 30.

With the victory, Belfast (13-0) advances to the semifinals where it will host No. 6 John Bapst (9-5) of Bangor — which upset No. 3 Washington Academy of East Machias (9-4) in its quarterfinal match — on Saturday, June 1, at 10 a.m.

The Crusaders also defeated No. 11 Presque Isle (5-8) in a prelim playoff match on Tuesday, May 28.

Belfast and John Bapst did not meet during the regular season.

The individual results, with Lion players listed first, were: In singles, Josh Chun beat Caleb Braley, 6-0, 6-1; Eli Jolliffe beat Jacob Cyr, 6-1, 6-0; and Max Lewis beat Brady Georgia, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, Dyllan Clark and Vin Bonarrigo beat Jay Theriault and Justin Bishop, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (2); and Sam Spectre and Kyle Agbuya beat Alex Chapman and Matt Preble, 6-4, 6-1.
