The American Legion Junior League swung into action for area players on Sunday, June 9 as Midcoast — a team comprised of players ages 13-17 from Waldo and Knox counties — collected two wins on the afternoon.

On Sunday at Troy Howard Middle School, Midcoast sprung to a pair of wins — 9-0 and 6-1 — over visiting Mattanawcook of Lincoln in a doubleheader.

Midcoast plays its home games at THMS.

The season is made up of 20 regular-season games before the Zone 1 playoffs begin on Saturday, July 27. Zone winners advance to the state tournament, which will begin on Thursday, Aug. 1 at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.

Teams in the league include Midcoast, Mattanawcook, Sluggers, Motor City, M-Loons, Bangor, Acadians, Machias, Hampden, Penquis, Sebasticook and Skowhegan.

Midcoast team members include Dylan Abbott, Andrew Abelon, Jason Bartlett, Brandon Cournoyer, True Crane, Joey Curtis, Eamon Goscinski, Jason Greenleaf, Chris Kelley, Liam McConnell, Pat McConnell, Sam Moody, Ethan Porter, Logan Putansu, Aidan Schecter, Tanner Veilleux and Tommy Walker. The team is coached by Scott Cournoyer.

The following is a recap of the first two games of the season for Midcoast:

Midcoast 9, Mattanawcook 0

At Belfast June 9, the local nine shut out Mattanawcook. Midcoast scored three runs in the first inning, two in the third, one in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Leading Midcoast at the plate were Veilleux (hit, 2 runs), Abbott (hit, run), Schecter (hit, run, RBI), Moody (hit), Porter (run), Greenleaf (RBI), Crane (hit, RBI), and Walker (run).

Curtis spun a two-hit shutout on the bump for Midcoast as he walked three and struck out 10 in the winning effort.

Midcoast 6, Mattanawcook 1

At Belfast June 9, Midcoast broke a 1-1 tie with a five-run seventh inning and spurned Mattanawcook. Midcoast scored in the fifth and Mattanawcook in the fourth.

Leading the locals at the plate were Veilleux (run), Dylan Abbott (run), Schecter (run, RBI), Crane (hit, run, RBI), Greenleaf (hit), Cournoyer (run), Moody (hit, run, 2 RBIs) and Walker (hit, RBI).

Crane went seven innings for Midcoast, as he allowed four hits and three walks, with 10 strikeouts.
