Throughout the District 2 Little League 11- and 12-year-old baseball tournament, Medomak Valley used timely hitting, strong fielding, aggressive base running and, of course, their ace in the hole — namely, tall, hard-throwing, right-handed pitcher Gabe Lash — to stay one or more steps ahead of the competition.

Medomak again used that combination of impressive skills on Friday night, July 12 en route to a 12-1, four-inning victory over Oceanside in the district championship game at E. Allen Gordon Field in Rockland.

Medomak, which finished 3-0 and had two lopsided victories and one nip-and-tuck win during its strong district title run, moves on to the state tournament, which begins on Saturday, July 20 in Lewiston.

Medomak finished 3-0 in the district tourney, while Oceanside, which made a strong run after it fell in its first game, ended 3-2.

A tournament that started with five champion hopefuls was whittled to two, with one team — unbeaten Medomak Valley — in the driver's seat for the coveted district crown before Friday's game, played on a somewhat wet field after heavy rain in the area earlier in the day.

The double-elimination baseball tournament continued on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 9-10 with games in Rockland and Thomaston, as two squads — Medomak and Oceanside — emerged in the hunt for the district title.

On Tuesday, Medomak Valley advanced to the championship game with a 2-1 win over Waldo County (1-2) at Gordon Field in Rockland, while Oceanside eliminated Lincoln County (1-2) with an 11-6 victory at the Little League field in Thomaston.

On Wednesday, Oceanside also beat Waldo County 9-2 in an elimination game at Gordon Field, to advance to Friday’s final to face Medomak Valley, also at Gordon Field.

The following is a recap of recent games:

Championship: Medomak 12, Oceanside 1 (4 inns.)

At Rockland July 12, Gabe Lash was at it again. He simply stymied and overpowered Oceanside to record his second complete-game, no-hit performance of the district tourney. The talented all-around diamond athlete finished his four innings of mound work with no hits, two walks and six strikeouts.

Darge started and worked the bump for several innings before Proctor came on in relief for Oceanside. The teammates combined to allow 11 hits, walked five, hit a batter and fanned three.

Medomak grabbed the momentum — and put a stranglehold on the title — with five runs in the first inning, four in the second and three in the third. Oceanside scored one in the third as Blair crossed the plate.

Medomak's offense was keyed by Bickford, Havener and Gabe Lash. Bickford had two singles, a line-drive home run to center field and three runs, while Gabe Lash finished with a single, double and two runs and Havener two singles, double and run.

Others Medomak players who contributed were Blake (2 singles, run), Shuman (single, 2 runs), Geaghan (run), Simmons (run) and Austin Lash (run).

Oceanside 9, Waldo County 2

At Rockland July 10, Oceanside advanced to the District 2 championship game with a win over Waldo County. Oceanside scored two in the first, one in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth, while Waldo County scored both its runs in the second.

Leading Oceanside at the plate was Winslow (single, run), Darge (run), Pratt (single, run), Proctor (double, 2 runs), Chiaramonte (run), Fifield (single, run), Watkinson (2 singles, run), Woodman (2 singles) and Blair (triple, double, run).

For Waldo County, Harriman (single), Gale (2 singles), Luce (single, run), Bryant (single, run), Parker (single) and Lindelof (single) paced the offense.

Oceanside pitchers allowed seven hits and no walks, with three strikeouts. Waldo County pitchers 10 hits and nine walks, with eight strikeouts.

Medomak Valley 2, Waldo County 1

At Rockland July 9, the first two batters of the game scored for Medomak Valley, which proved enough in a narrow, one-run win over Waldo County. Medomak Valley’s runs came in the first, as did Waldo County’s.

Medomak Valley was paced at the plate by Blake (run), Schumann (run) and Gabe Lash (single).

For Waldo County, Abbot (run, stolen base), Harriman (single) and Littlefield (single) paced the offense.

Harriman pitched for Waldo County and allowed only one hit, while walking three and hitting one batter, while striking out nine. Geaghan and Bickford pitched for Medomak Valley, as the duo allowed two hits and four walks, with six strikeouts.

Blake drew a walk and Schumann was hit by a pitch ahead of Gabe Lash, who singled to load the bases. Porter and Havener plated runs on bases-loaded walks, which proved the difference in the win for Medomak Valley.

Oceanside 12, Lincoln County 7

At Thomaston July 9, Oceanside, which lost its opening game before it battled back to win three straight, survived and knocked Lincoln County out of the tournament. Oceanside scored six runs in the first inning, three in the second and three in the fourth, while Lincoln County scored one in the first, two in the second, three in the fourth and one in the fifth.
