Editor's note: Our sincere thanks to Frank Champa for his years of writing the news from Brooks for readers of Waldo Village Soup and The Republican Journal. Frank's hand-picked successor is Melissa McDonald, originally from Maryland, and a resident of Brooks for almost nine years. Married with two grown children, she is a retired nurse and now works at Ralph's Cafe. She is also an avid lace knitter and animal lover. Welcome, Melissa!

I hope everyone has recovered from the heat wave of last weekend. A lot is going on in Brooks. Just a reminder that yoga class is held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 4 p.m. at the Varney. The class is free and Wednesday is chair yoga, suitable for all.

The first fundraising tea of the year was held this past Sunday in the beautiful garden of Rani Howe. The Marsh River Cooperative was the beneficiary. The next tea will be held in the garden of Nancy Quimby to benefit the Marsh River Theater. More information to follow.

The Marsh River Co-op now has Nitro Cold Brew Coffee on tap. The coffee is made with cold, filtered water and can take anywhere from 12 to 48 hours to brew. It's then dispensed via kegerator (nitrogen in the line — the same principle as tapped beer). Two sizes are available. Stop in and try some. Sugar and cream are optional and they even have coffee ice cubes so the drink will not be diluted.

The Varney Thrift Store volunteer staff enjoyed a dinner at Ralph's Cafe this past Wednesday to thank them for their hard work and dedication. The store wouldn't be possible without them, and they give back so much to the community. There's always something to be found there — check it out if you haven't already. The Thrift Store is open Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Currently in rehearsal at the Marsh River Theater: "The Revolutionists" and "Gypsy." More information to follow as these shows get closer to opening night.

Congratulations to Frank Champa for being named vice chairman of the Regional School Unit 3 School Board.

Jane McLaughlin, our wonderful town clerk, is a grandmother! Oliver Ethan Stubbs was born July 22 and weighed 8 lbs., 12 oz. His parents are Ashley and Ethan Stubbs. Congratulations and best wishes to you all!
