Waldo Community Action Partners' Early Childhood Program will furnish pre-kindergarten services to Regional School Unit 71 for the upcoming school year.

Until it closed late in May, Broadreach Family and Community Services had been providing pre-K services for RSU 71. Broadreach filed June 4 for Chapter 7 bankruptcy with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Bangor.

The RSU 71 Board of Directors voted June 24 to appropriate $62,400 from its contingency fund to provide four pre-K classes this fall, two at Gladys Weymouth Elementary School in Morrill and two at East Belfast School.

In a press release Monday, Aug. 19, WCAP announced that it is RSU 71's new partner for pre-K services.

In addition to providing public school pre-K services through collaborations with Regional School Units 3, 20 and 22, WCAP’s Early Childhood Program has been providing Head Start and Early Head Start services in Waldo County since 1965. Head Start promotes the school readiness of children under 5 through education, health, social and other services.

The four RSU 71 pre-K classrooms will blend public school and Head Start services to ensure an efficient delivery of programming for all families, according to the press release.

WCAP is accepting applications now for both public pre-K and Head Start classrooms throughout Waldo County.

Families interested in enrolling their children in pre-K or Head Start should call WCAP at 338-3827 or complete the first application step online at waldocap.org/?page_id=27.
