By and large, it was a successful start to the high school soccer season for Waldo County squads, as four of the five teams in action netted victories.

On Friday, Sept. 6, Mount View collected wins over Nokomis of Newport, while the Belfast boys were outscored by Waterville and Searsport girls bested George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill (see separate story).

The following is a recap of reported results:

Girls soccer

Mount View 9, Nokomis 4

At Thorndike Sept. 6, the Mustangs had a successful debut in Class C with a lopsided win over the visiting Warriors. The hosts held a 6-2 lead at halftime.

Gabby Ravin, Sage Pound and Hannah Coolen completed the trifecta — as each netted a hat trick — in the win for the ‘Stangs, while Pound added three assists and Coolen, Kaylee Anderson, Hannah Oliver and Gabby Allen one.

Meagan Whitten had three goals for Nokomis and Samantha Wilson one.

Zoe Mayhew and Gabby Hanks combined to make six saves on 15 shots in goal for the Mustangs, while Celia Smith made eight saves on 20 shots for the Warriors.

“Nokomis played a high line and it took us a bit to adjust,” said Mustang coach David Page. “But once we started getting the passing game firing and give-and-goes clicking, it was really fun to watch. Nokomis has some quality athletes, but we were just moving the ball around really well and wore them down. It's fun to watch us when we get going like that. We gave up a few late goals and will have to work on seeing games through, but this was definitely the positive start we were hoping for.”

Waterville 4, Belfast 0

At Belfast Sept. 6, the Purple Panthers had little trouble with the host Lions and prowled to a shutout win. Waterville led 2-0 at halftime.

Paige St. Pierre had a hat trick on the day for the visitors, while Sadie Garling added one score.

Casey Snow made nine saves on 13 shots in net for Belfast, while Jacie Richard made one save on one shot for Waterville.

Ricky Nelson minded the net for the visitors and made four saves.

Waterville 5, Belfast 3

At Waterville Sept. 6, the Lions scored three goals, but the Purple Panthers roared loudest en route to the opening victory.
