The Belfast football team, after winning only two games a season ago, hoped to get halfway to last year’s win total on Friday night, Sept. 6 with a strong performance against John Bapst of Bangor.

Ultimately, the Lions received both.

Issak Cunningham rushed for 105 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns — and added a third when he returned an interception 54 yards for a score — as the Lions came away with a hard-fought, 26-7 high school gridiron victory over the Crusaders.

Dylan Abbott had 113 yards of total offense for Belfast, including a 25-yard touchdown pass and two-point conversion toss, each to Chris Kelley.

Jack Hansen added 70 yards of offense on four touches for Belfast, while Brian White had 35 yards on four carries.

Chris Fournier (12 tackles, quarterback sack), Donovin Armstrong (6 tackles), Chris Kelley (5 tackles), Josh Fairbrother (5 tackles), Hansen (4 tackles), Cam Watts (4 tackles) and Tanner Veilleux (4 tackles) paced the Lion defense.

Wilson Higgins threw a touchdown pass to Rhett McDonald for John Bapst’s lone score.
