From the Town Office

There will be a metal and white goods pickup on Saturday, Oct. 19, starting at 7 a.m. The town will pick up stoves, refrigerators and freezers (doors must be removed or secured), microwaves, washers, dryers, metal gutters and gutter pipes, tin, metal bed frames, metal headboards, metal bed springs (no cloth covering allowed), and bicycle frames. Any metal (with no wood, plastic, cloth, rubber, etc., attached), no longer than 5 feet, and under 100 pounds. All items must be curbside (within 5 feet of the road surface). All items must be free of liquids; i.e., petroleum, antifreeze, water or oils. Call the Town Office at 567-3404 or Pinkerton & Sons Disposal at 338-8330 for any further information.

The autumnal equinox is at 3:50 a.m. on Sept. 23, so fall is almost here officially. This morning it was 47 degrees, so there is a chill in the air. Gardens are winding down and old plants are being cleared out. Fellow gardeners are putting seaweed on their plots to add extra nutrition.

Tonight is the full Harvest Moon, which, because of the angle of the ecliptic with our horizon this time of year, will look full for five days. Of course, there are more storms percolating in the South, but we are lucky here in Maine not to experience their damage.

The harbor continues to be busy with fishermen in powerboats and even in a tandem kayaks. The stores are full of Halloween merchandise, as Halloween ranks just behind Christmas as the second most for decorations sold. There will be lots of Halloween events in town for the children; stay tuned for dates and times. This weather is great for hiking and biking, so get out and enjoy the days!
