Midcoast high school golfers hit the links at Natanis Golf Club mere hours before Mother Nature demonstrated her reign — quite literally — and when the final strokes were tallied, area student-athletes had put on quite a course show on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A and B state qualifier.

Belfast's James Ritter, Thomas Parker and Tommy Walker, Medomak Valley's Carson Murphy and Sean Sebrey, as well as Oceanside's Austin Chilles, used their strong, consistent play to earn spots in the state individual tournament.

Additionally, Belfast and Medomak Valley, fresh off their play in the league shootout championships (the Lions and Panthers tied for third), earned positions at the team states, in Class B, which will take place on Saturday, Oct. 5 back at Natanis.

The individual state championships will take place on Saturday, Oct. 12, also at Natanis.

There were no student-athletes who qualified from Camden Hills, which participates in Class A, but Windjammer Parker Hilchey came close, as he shot 87, two strokes off the 85 cutoff.

The team state qualifiers from Tuesday's league event included:

Class A — Mount Ararat of Topsham (plus automatic bid via conference title), Messalonskee of Oakland, Lewiston, Edward Little of Auburn and Hampden Academy.

Class B — Leavitt of Turner (plus automatic bid via conference title), Belfast, Waterville, Medomak Valley and Gardiner.

The Midcoast individuals who qualified included:

Belfast — Ritter, Parker and Walker

Medomak Valley — Murphy and Sebrey

At the qualifier, there were 77 golfers in Class A and 83 in Class B.

Mount Ararat's Caleb Manuel set a course record with a 9-under par 63 to finish first in Class A.

Leavitt's Ruby Haylock shot a 4-over par 76 to finish first in Class B.

The cut for Class A was 85, which included the top 15 and ties.

For Class B, the top 14 qualified as the cut was 90.
