I had a nice visit from my Aunt Rosemary Pillsbury and cousin Cassie for a game of Scrabble. Enjoyed sitting outside in the sunshine. We take our Scrabble very seriously; Cassie was the big winner of the day.

I'll be logging some miles next week with lab work on Monday, a trip for a surgical consultation in Boston on Tuesday, and then a follow-up at Maine Medical Partners in Portland on Thursday.

Many thanks to six of the guys from the Unity College Woodsmen Team for their help bringing in the dock at Kanokolus. Congratulations to the men's team for placing first at their home meet in September. They will be traveling to Syracuse, New York, on the 19th for a big meet there.

We did find a fishing hook stuck in the buoy line which marks the swimming area. This emphasizes why there isn't supposed to be any fishing in the swimming area.

Just two more weeks left of The Market of Unity. I've picked up some early Christmas presents there. We'd like the market to continue; they need your support.

The Darling's ice cream truck will be at the elementary school on School Street in Unity on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. Donations will help support the Open Door, which serves over 100 meals each Thursday at the Community Center.

I stopped by the Good Steward Thrift Shop last Saturday to pick up some books for the Little Free Library located at the Town Office. Their prices are unbeatable. One family was there outfitting their young twins with like-new clothing, including coats. The young girl was enamored with her new Elsa jacket.

Mac's Hardware has a beautiful selection of fall mums and when I was there the other day they also had a large assortment of pumpkins for $5.

The Waldo County Humane Society will hold its first fall rabies clinic on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Brooks Fire Station, Route 139, Brooks, from 9 to 11 a.m. Dr. Chris Tomalty of Little River Veterinary Hospital will administer the shots.

Rabies shots are free to Waldo County animal owners and $7 for pets from other counties. Donations will be gratefully accepted. Please bring all animals on leashes or in carriers. It is also important to bring proof of a previous rabies shot so your pet can receive a three-year rabies certificate.

Looking to make apple crisp? I use this fool-proof recipe I found in the "Unity Cooks Now and Then" cookbook for the "crisp" part. One cup flour, 1 cup quick oats, 1 cup loosely packed brown sugar and 1/2 cup softened margarine. Mix together till crumbly and sprinkle over your sliced apples and sugar. This is enough "crisp" for a 9-by-13-inch pan.
