The town of Thorndike has appointed Shawn as the interim fire chief for Thorndike. Congratulations, Shawn.

Papa Dixon and Beth paid a surprise visit last week and brought us some boot stretchers from Farmington. Thanks, folks.

Do not forget the chicken barbecue sponsored by Dirigo Grange, Sunday, Aug. 2, at noon. This will be takeout only at the Ingraham Equipment parking lot in Knox at the intersection of routes 220 and 139. $10 per person includes a half-chicken, coleslaw, chips and dessert. Please come and support your local Grange.

The Thorndike town meeting has been set for 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Thorndike Town Office parking lot. All social distancing and COVID-19 protocols will be followed. This will be an outside event, so there is a rain date of Saturday, Aug. 29. I will post more details in future columns. For now, please jot down the date.

The Freedom Grange is planning another takeout only dessert event at the Ingraham Equipment parking lot Sunday, Aug. 9, 2-4 p.m. There will be homemade blueberry pie with whipped cream for $5 and blueberry muffins at two for $3. Another chance to support your local Grange.

We are having some nice sit-in-the-gazebo weather with my champagne on ice and a lovely green champagne glass. The best days of summer.

A special thanks to my helpers of last week: My newspaper lady and chauffeur, Merrily, a big thank-you to Alan, Chris and Max for mowing and thank you, Victoria, for helping Dustin water his potatoes.

John A. Shedd is quoted as saying, "A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are for."

Stay safe and have a great week.
