Here’s what’s happening in Searsport this week:

Blood drive

On Thursday, Aug. 6, there is a very needed Red Cross Blood Drive at the North Searsport Methodist Church at 753 Mt. Ephraim Road from 2 to 7 p.m. Did you know one pint of blood can save three lives? If you are healthy, consider donating; there may be a cookie and juice involved.

Turkey supper

The Searsport Methodist Church will be hosting one of their popular takeout turkey suppers from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8. The suppers include all the fixin’s and are topped off with your choice of a piece of homemade pie, all for $10 per person.

At Penobscot Marine Museum

If you haven’t taken one of the outdoor walking tours on either Tuesday evening or Saturday morning, you are missing a good local take! Tours, led by staff, make seven stops that capture interesting facts of Searsport’s history. Themes include: stories of Searsport sailing families, artists and authors of Searsport, and the architecture of the town. Tours last about 45 minutes and cost is $20 per household. For reservations and more specific information, call Jeana at 207-548- 2529, Monday through Wednesday, 8 a.m. to noon.

Sears Island

There always seems to be something interesting happening at Sears Island these days. Right now there is a Bingo Scavenger Hunt for kids during the whole month of August. To participate, oick up a “bingo card” at the kiosk at the entrance or download one from the Friends of Sears Island website. When you find one of the items, snap a picture and send it to outreach@friendsofsearsisland.org.

If you find five in a row in any direction, you will be entered into a raffle for a prize. The whole family can join in the fun, but the winner, announced at the end of August, must be between the ages of 5 and 12.

New stairs have been installed to the western beach by Matthew Southard as part of his Eagle Scout service project, with the help of scoutmaster, Jo Dargon, and a few enthusiastic volunteers. A much-needed improvement for Sears Island hikers!

Town business

Selectmen’s meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7 p.m. at Union Hall and are always open to the public. If you missed this week’s, you can always view it in on Cable Channel 1303 and now back to Channel 2 or download it from the town website.

Road closure

Mt. Ephraim Road will be closed from Route 1 to County Line Road for culvert replacement Aug. 10-22. Only local traffic will be allowed to pass.
