I got up early this morning to take a walk around the yard. I checked out my raised beds where this year I was growing some buttercup squash. The little squashes were growing, but much to my dismay one whole hill had shriveled up and died. In my fit of anger I tore them out and added to the compost. My compost pile pumpkins seem to be thriving with the vines growing up into the lilac bushes.

A citizen recently posted a picture of a flotilla of 14 loons on Unity Pond! The recent loon count was 20 adults and 2 chicks, along with ring bill gulls, osprey, eagles, great blue herons, scores of cormorants, a pair of belted kingfishers, sanderlings, a mam merganser with six chicks and a flock of 30 young Canada geese of varying sizes.

Happy retirement to our local mail carrier Gay Leighton!

I spoke with Maine Gravesite Maintenance, the professional gravestone company that resets, repairs and cleans gravestones. They had originally planned on finishing up Boulter and doing some work in Pond 1 cemetery in July but with the obnoxiously hot weather, and the fact that they sold their home, has put them behind. They have assured me they will be here in August.

Speaking of hot, I have taken advantage of our local eateries recently when it was just too hot to cook. Now I worked in restaurants in summers and I feel bad for anyone standing over a hot grill or working near ovens! Make sure to thank them!
