The Midcoast Recreation Center will host its first Parking Lot Pickleball Invitational on the organization's outdoor courts on Saturday, Aug. 15.

The invitational will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a rain date of Saturday, Aug. 22.

Participation will be limited to 24 entrants in an effort to comply with the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic restrictions in place by Maine Gov. Janet Mills. Entry fees are $25 per player, though donations are welcome.

The event is not a tournament, but an organized event to allow everyone to play with a diverse group of players, and therefore, all skill levels are welcome.

Games will be played to 11 points, with winners determined in a best-of-three format, and no results will be recorded.

A raffle also will be held during this event, as prizes include pickleball court rentals, MRC sweatshirts, a membership to MRC, and more. Participants receive five raffle tickets on entry, and more tickets can be purchased for $5 each.

MRC is a non-profit organization that works to offer affordable tennis and ice programs. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the business has struggled to keep its doors open. The Parking Lot Pickleball Invitational is one of the fundraisers MRC will hold in the hope of recovering revenue lost during the shutdown.

Other MRC fundraisers include a golf tournament on Friday,, Aug. 21, charity yard sale on Saturday, Aug. 29 and the sixth annual Benefit Tennis tournament on Wednesday, Sep. 9.
