VillageSNancy A. Rhodes, 85, died Aug. 2, 2020, at Waldo County Hospital surrounded by family members and nurses who loved her and cared for her. Nancy, who was born Oct. 17, 1934, on her grandmother’s farm in Thorndike, was a lifelong resident of Waldo County. She was the eldest daughter of Fred and Alice Meservey.

Nancy was a very nurturing person who spent her life caring for others. For many years, she worked as a cook at Belfast schools, where the was known for her yeast rolls and extra servings. However, Nancy’s true passion was nursing, and she worked the last 40 years of her career as a CNA. Once asked why she waited until 79 to retire, she stated, 'Because I love being with people and caring for them.”

After becoming a resident of Bayview Manor, Nancy continued to work comforting others. She was recognized in 2017 by The Remember Me Program for her dedication and contributions.

Nancy is survived by her children, Darlene and Weyman Cowan of Dallas, Ga.; Darolyn and Emery Shute of Stockton Springs; and Donna Rhodes of Farmingdale; her brothers Harold and Joyce Meservey, and Richard and Shirley Meservey; her sisters Gert Lapham and Annie and Bob Miles; her five grandchildren, Joshua Cunningham, Nicole Ceballos, Ryan Shute, and Adam and Matthew Cowan; seven great-grandchildren; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
