A Freedom man was killed early Saturday morning when he was thrown from the ATV he was riding on a trail in Anson.

According to the Maine Warden Service, Roland Robitaille, 69, was second in a line of seven ATVs riding on a trail behind Solon Road in Anson.

At approximately 10:40 a.m., while crossing a bridge on the trail, Robitaille lost control of his 2017 Yamaha Grizzly, went over the side, rolled, and was thrown off the ATV.

Robitaille was not wearing a helmet and riders following in his group found him face down with severe trauma to his head and chest.

Members of his group called 911 and administered CPR until rescue personnel arrived, but Robitaille was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to a funeral home in Skowhegan.

The Maine Warden Service was assisted by the Anson Fire Department and Anson-Madison Rescue.

Robitaille's death was one of three unrelated fatal ATV crashes that occurred over the weekend.

Tyler Curry, 29, of Groton, Massachusetts, died from his injuries after being thrown from his ATV in Lang Township Aug. 21 at around 6:20 p.m., and Joshua Violette, 32, of Readfield also died after being thrown off his ATV at around 10 a.m. Aug. 22 in The Forks. His passenger, 33-year-old Ashlie Dostie of Mt. Vernon, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Reddington Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan.

Robitaille, Curry, Violette and Dostie were not wearing helmets.
