Hello, Palermo Community!

This week’s column will be a short one as I am still in the process of reaching out for news. Please send me yours!

Board of Selectmen

I attended the Palermo Board of Selectmen meeting Thursday night and talked with them about how this column can help publish town news. Watch this space, check out the town website (townofpalermo.org), or follow on Facebook.

By now, you should have received your property tax bill. If you haven’t, you can contact the Town Office at 993-2297 or send an email to topclerk@fairpoint.net. As a reminder, tax bills are due on or before Oct. 17.

Have you noticed the Town Office hours have changed? The new hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

A hint of fall

I have a swamp maple on my property that always seems to show the first red leaf on Aug. 1. Every time I see it turn, I start to feel an inner sense of urgency. (“Hurry, hurry! Winter is coming!”)

There is a lot more to do here to get ready for winter (former city girl, as was implied in my first column). Getting the woodpile down cellar, stacking next year’s wood, cleaning out the flower beds, raking, putting away my “summer toys” (including the trailer and ATV), taking in the lawn chairs and the porch swing — I’m sure your “to do” lists are much the same!

Since I am new to all this, I need to start early. I wonder how many years it will take before Oct. 1 is soon enough to start?

Enjoy the cooler weather!
