So many September birthdays — all that New Year’s hanky panky! Happy birthday to my fellow Virgos! Enjoy these last days of summer, squeeze in a few more lake swims, collect seeds for next spring, finish up those outdoor paint projects — these are keeping me busy.

The Jackson Spinners group has had a few outdoor get-togethers through the summer at different farms. I am not sure what the cooler months will bring for the group. If you are interested in coming to craft with us, send me an email for updates.

Town Office

You’ll get your tax bill any day now! And it will have a new mill rate of (drum roll) $20.20 — really! With the new assessments it is now possible for the full state homestead exemption of $25,000 to be applied on your primary residence. Next selectmen's meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Farm fresh & local

Support your local farmer. Mending Wall Farm on Route 7 breeds Katahdin sheep for meat. All cuts of lamb for sale. Completely grass-fed, nine to 10 months old at the time of harvesting. Sold directly to you from Mending Wall Farm at below-market prices. You can find Doug at the United Farmers Market in Belfast on Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., or call 722-3227.

Just up the road from me is Hidden Hobby Farm, right next to the North Branch Marsh Stream bridge on Village Road. They have a cooler out with eggs every day, and also sell baby ducks. Call 542-4891 for more information.

Jackson history nugget

Thinking about September babies it struck me, as I perused my copy of “History & Early Settlers of Jackson, Maine” (Rev. 1976 by Theo Stacy & Donna Nickerson) that popular names have changed quite a bit since the 1800s. There were, of course your classics — Katherine, Elizabeth and Matilda; John, Daniel and Nathan for the boys.

But, if you are interested in a little name revival, while giving a nod to Jackson’s early residents, may I suggest these alternatives: Allura, Alzada, Daraxa, Lulu, Persinia and Vesta; and for the boys: Abijah, Ebenezer, Ezra, Peregrine and Shadrack.

Savour these last days of summer!
