William Deane Jr., 44, of Lincolnville, was indicted the week of Sept. 22 on charges of illegal possession of a firearm, domestic violence assault with priors, domestic violence criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and causing a police standoff.

On Aug. 19, at approximately 9:11 p.m., police received a call for a domestic situation at Belfast Variety on Back Belmont Road.

According to court documents, a woman reported that her boyfriend, Deane, had assaulted her and threatened to kill her with a rifle. The woman said she was driving and Deane was sitting in the front passenger seat with a rifle placed between his seat and the center console.

While on route to Belfast Variety, Deane accused the woman of spying on him, became angry and grabbed the rifle. He pointed the firearm at her face and said, “Stop lying or I’ll shoot you in the face.” The affidavit said the woman pushed the rifle barrel away and continued driving to the store.

Before she entered the store, the woman said, Deane elbowed her in the right shoulder and face area. Once in the store, she reported the incident to a store employee, who then called Waldo County Dispatch. When she exited the store, she discovered Deane had left in their vehicle and thought he would likely return to their home at 2856 Belfast Road in Lincolnville.

Police responded to the Lincolnville address in search of Deane, where the couple’s vehicle was located. He was observed peering through two different windows. At one point, Deane exited the main house into a sunroom. Police then ordered Dean to fully exit the house, but instead he walked back into the residence.

The Maine State Police Special Response Team was called in, and set up a perimeter around the house. After an all-night standoff at the residence, the tactical team went into the home early Aug. 20 and found Deane either asleep or passed out. A dose of Narcan was administered to revive him and he was then taken to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast.

At his Sept. 4 initial hearing, Deane was released on $500 secured cash bail, but confined to house arrest with an electronic monitoring system. He is to have no contact with the woman or be in possession of alcohol, illegal drugs or firearms.

Deane is scheduled for an Oct. 13 hearing at the Waldo County Judicial Center.
