The Belfast field hockey team began the 2020 high school season — the way so many others have — with a pair of shutout victories.

Annually one of Class B's premier teams, the Lions collected a 3-0 road win over Cony of Augusta on Wednesday, Sept. 30 and 4-0 home victory over Brewer on Monday, Sept. 28 at Point Lookout in Northport.

The following is a recap of those games:

Belfast 3, Cony 0

At Augusta Sept. 30, the Lions logged their second straight shutout with a victory over the Rams. The squads were scoreless at halftime and the Lions led 2-0 after three quarters. Field hockey in Maine has shifted to four 15-minute quarters.

Chelsea Gaiero, Grace Hall and Kiara Doolan caged goals for Belfast, while Reilly Nickerson and Doolan logged assists.

Madison Shorey made five saves on seven shots in goal for the Lions, while Jenna Hanoian made six saves on 15 shots in the cage for the Rams.

Belfast held a 7-2 edge in penalty corners.

In the 7-versus-7 jayvee game, Belfast earned a 4-0 win over Cony.

Belfast 4, Brewer 0

At Northport Sept. 28, the Lions went on the offensive against visiting Brewer and emerged victorious with a shutout win on the artificial turf.

Belfast led 1-0 at halftime and 2-0 after three quarters before caging two more scores in the fourth stanza.

Chelsea Gaiero scored a goal and added an assist in the win for the Lions, while Sarah Woods added two scores; Audra Faulkingham, one goal; and Kiara Doolan, one assist.

Madison Shorey did not face a shot in the cage for Belfast, while Brewer goalie Madison Diaz made 15 saves on 22 shots.

The hosts also held a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners.
