Dixie H. Sorey, 75, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020, at Bangor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Aug. 8, 1945, in Belfast, the daughter of John and Goldie (McKeen) Howard. Dixie was born with a hole in her heart and she was the 11th person in the world to have open heart surgery to make the repairs.

To Dixie, family was everything. Her children, grandchildren, friends and church family were foremost in her heart and mind. Dixie’s house was always full with kids that she loved, cared for and cherished as “hers.”

She enjoyed crafting, along with gardening, bird watching, traveling to gospel concerts with “her girls” (Emma and Morgan Sorey) and was known for her homemade Christmas ornaments. She also attended and worked on many mission trips with her church family that she always enjoyed and looked forward to. She loved all animals and bred dogs for a time. Dixie was a real estate broker for many years and later in her life she went back to school to be a CNA.

Dixie is survived by three children, Donald Sorey and fiancée Karen Crocker of Millinocket, Doriann Bowden and husband David of Hampden and Dealesa Sorey and husband Stephen Najjar of Weare, N.H.; grandchildren Craig Withee, Emily Sorey, Morgan Sorey, Dante Bowden and Shayla Bowden; a sister, Vivian Wardwell; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and stepfather, Lloyd Arey, Dixie was predeceased by a grandson, Jason Sorey; a sister, Kitty Schmutte; and a brother, Peter Howard.
