Kathy Ryan started her baby clothes store out of a shed in her yard in 1995. An accomplished seamstress, she also sold custom quilts, bags and aprons.

The shed lacked heating, and in winter months, Ryan was forced to close up shop. In 2000, her husband built a garage with one side dedicated to Ryan’s sewing and baby clothes business.

In her new heated building, she said she was open for three or four years when she noticed, with the advent of Facebook, a significant drop in her business. She operated the store until 2013, when she closed.

Recently, she said, people have been contacting her to see if she is going to reopen the business. “People that were kids now have their own children” and are looking for baby clothes, she said.

Ryan said she taught her granddaughter to make change at her store. “I’d like to get her to come help me out when she’s not in school.”

Besides selling used baby clothes and related items (strollers, high chairs, pack 'n' plays, shoes, toys, videos), Ryan takes orders for quilts. She also sells baby diaper bags that come loaded with assorted items, ready to take to a baby shower. At this time, she said, she is not selling items on consignment.

The Baby Shed, located at 42 Back Belmont Road, just past Halls Corner Road in Belmont, will reopen its doors for the first time in seven years Saturday, Oct. 24. The store hours are Monday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ryan said there will a sign next to her mailbox, and her store is just up the driveway.
