Fine art painter Harry Swanson, 89, formerly of Lincolnville, passed away Nov. 25, 2020, in Fairview, Tenn.

Harry expressed the beauty of Maine and New England in his sea and landscape paintings and enjoyed touring the Maine coast with his wife, Marion, to study and photograph the landscape. He once commented, “The beauty of nature is irreplaceable.”

Born and educated in Hartford, Conn., Harry excelled in basketball, baseball and art design, studying at the Hartford Art School, and then further developing his illustration skills at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Electronics Laboratory, the Purnell Co., and Itek Corp. During his years at Itek, Harry illustrated NASA camera systems, including those used on the Viking spacecraft to send the first pictures to Earth from the surface of Mars.

Harry relocated the H Swanson Studio and Gallery to Lincolnville Beach in 1989, and painted and lived there with his wife, Marion, for 20 years, creating fine art paintings of nature and space. His paintings are in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and internationally, and he received regional and national recognition for his art.

Harry is survived by his wife, Marion; two children, Alan Swanson and Anne Kardenetz; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; nephews and a niece.
