A pickup truck stolen from a Herrick Street address has been located in Massachusetts.

On Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, a red 2012 Toyota Tacoma with a metal rack and Rhode Island license plates was stolen sometime during the night from the driveway at 20 Herrick St. in Belfast.

The highly visible truck was located the next day abandoned off Interstate 95 near Walpole, Massachusetts.

Owner Mike Banahan said he recovered the vehicle in Walpole and there was no damage that he could see to the body of the truck or anything mechanical. The interior of the vehicle, however, did show signs of vandalism, he said.

“He took one of my knives and cut things up on the inside,” Banahan said. The intruder also spit “all over” the interior.

Banahan said neighbors saw the truck, with no lights on, exit the driveway on Herrick Street around 12:30 a.m. Dec. 29. They saw the lights come on farther down the road.

Items stolen from the truck include clothes, a flashlight, a tool belt, a crowbar, the vehicle’s registration and mail that had been left in the vehicle.

A contractor driving on Interstate 95 South in Sharon, Massachusetts, near Foxboro, found the tool belt, the mail and the registration on the side of the highway and mailed them back to Banahan, saying in an unsigned note he knew what it was like to have tools stolen.

Walpole Police had no record of the recovered vehicle, and calls to Massachusetts State Police were not immediately returned.

Banahan said he is thankful for the contractor’s act of kindness and for Travis Spencer of the Belfast Police, who answered his call.
