It seems to be that time of the year when not much is happening. There's very little snow for the snowmobilers around here. My husband has been looking at snowmobile reports from various parts of the state. Larry King's report of ice thickness doesn't sound very promising at this point, but it looks a bit better over the coming weeks. I've seen reports of snowshoes being nearly sold out, but locally you could probably just use your regular boots; the snow is not deep enough to sink into.

Budget season is sneaking up on us. The "special appropriations" budget meeting has been held and soon we'll be working on the municipal budget. We're hopeful that the state comes up with a plan for how we can hold our annual town meeting. We're still under COVID guidelines and that would max out our meeting at 50 people. We're looking at different avenues for holding town meeting this year. We have some important things to discuss, including ordinance updates.

Are you interested in serving on any town committees? If you are considering donating your time to the betterment of our community, please let Kari at the Town Office or one of the selectmen know. Standing committees include: Planning Board, Appeals Board, Cemetery Committee, Budget Committee, EDC (Economic Development Committee) and Recreation Committee. If you're considering joining the Fire Department please see Chief Blaine Parsons.

Nomination papers for one seat on the Board of Selectmen are available at the Town Office. Dan McCormick is committed to seeking reelection. I know I mentioned this in a previous article, but there had been some discussion on a Facebook page about whether Unity's staggered three-year terms were legal. In 1976 the town voted by warrant article to start electing selectmen on a staggered three-year term starting in 1977 instead of electing all three annually.

Selectmen's meetings are returning to the Town Office conference room starting Jan. 19.

Have you got your dog license yet? Reminder that as of Feb. 1 there is a $25 late fee per dog.

It's a short column this week. I feel the need to get dressed and head out to Mammie's Country Kitchen and get some of their fresh-made doughnuts!
