The abnormal year that was 2020 carried over into 2021, most notably in the high school winter sports season, as teams are relegated to a regional schedule.

With said schedule due to the pandemic, matches rarely, if ever, seen in a normal campaign come to fruition, just as two Waldo County teams in Mount View of Thorndike and Searsport faced off on Tuesday night, Jan. 19.

The schools, separated by a mere 23 miles, come from two distinctly different classes of play, as the Mustangs call Class B home, while the Vikings Class C, due to school enrollment.

That classification difference was notable on Tuesday, as Mount View made quick work of Searsport en route a 83-30 boys basketball victory.

The Mustangs, 2-0 on the young campaign after beating Waterville earlier, led 16-1 after one quarter, 42-7 at halftime and 62-17 at the end of the third quarter. It was the first game of the campaign for the Vikings.

Draedyn Furrow and Declan Knowlton paced the Mustangs with 16 points, as Wyatt Evensen tallied 12; Tyler Russell, 10; Sean Raven, seven; Isaac Ellis and Joe Grassi, six; Kyle Ingraham, three; Gage Carson, Nick Cobb and Ryan Oliver, two; and Noah Hurd, one. Raven and Ingraham knocked down treys.

Josh Wright paced Searsport with 10 points, while Elias Higgins added eight; Sean Paige and Chase Brassbridge, three; and Sam Cahill, Gabe Kneeland and Tim Smith, two. Brassbridge and Higgins sunk the only two 3-pointers for the Vikings.

Mount View finished 3-of-5 (60 percent) from the foul line, while the hosts were 6-of-12 (50 percent).
