Marie Haakenson, 93, got her wings and flew away Jan. 12, 2021, from Harbor Hill, Belfast. This had been her home for three years and she leaves behind friends who loved her, both on the staff and among fellow residents.

Marie saw many changes in her long life. As a child in Montana, she rode a horse to a one-room schoolhouse. Fast-forward to 2020 and she visited often with her daughter and son-in-law via FaceTime on an iPad. Marie was a strong-willed and courageous woman, able to adapt to everything life threw her way. She raised four children as a single parent in McKenna, Wash., and survived the heartbreak of losing a son and daughter to cancer.

Always a hard worker, she married Lee Haakenson in 1978 and they worked a dairy farm together for 28 years. Upon his death she moved to Maine. The long drive from Washington state to Maine in a moving van with her daughter Denise and Cutter the dog would be a highlight of her many stories. Marie quickly came to love Maine, and just as quickly many Maine people were added to the “Marie fan club.” Super Bowl parties became a tradition at her house, up until 2020.

Marie loved to laugh and enjoyed the company of like-minded friends of all ages. The extended Haakenson clan called her every week and visited often. Denise and Maynard (whom Marie called her favorite son-in-law) had the privilege of sharing Marie’s last 12 years. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews in Florida, Texas and Montana, including her eldest daughter Peg in Texas. So many friends, too great to mention (including her pals and partners in crime, Pat and Jan) will miss her greatly.

This is truly a great testament to a long life well lived.

The staff at Harbor Hill became another family, and the family of Marie Haakenson sincerely thanks them. A celebration of Marie’s life will be held at a later date when it is safe to gather again.
