With the end of the regular season upon them, the Searsport and Mount View girls basketball squads vied to end on a positive note on Friday night, Feb. 26, before the regional playoffs.

Both Waldo County teams had fires in their bellies, as they went basket for basket in the first half, as well as the majority of the third quarter, before the host Vikings rode an offensive wave to pull away late to net a 43-31 victory.

Searsport, which improved to 7-5, led 8-4 after the first quarter, 12-11 at halftime and 25-22 after three stanzas. Mount View finished the regular season 4-8.

Earlier in the campaign, the Vikings also nipped the home-standing Mustangs 39-37.

On Friday, Makenzie Alley, who recently surpassed 1,000 points for her career, poured in 28 points for Searsport, while Kyla Perkins added seven; Emily Mello, four; and Makenzie Tripp and Sarah Gent, two. The Vikings did not make a three-pointer.

Hannah Coolen netted 15 points for Mount View, while Madison Roux added seven; Hannah Ferreira, five; and Kricket Thompson and Syd Vogel, two. Coolen, Ferreira and Roux made treys for the visitors.

Searsport finished 13-of-20 (65 percent) from the foul line and Mustangs 10-of-15 (66 percent).

The teams struggled offensively in the first half, as it appeared lids were placed on the baskets, but still matched each other to keep pace.

The second half saw the ice shaken off, which melted the cold shooting of the opponents, as Searsport topped its entire first half point output with 13, each point coming from Alley.

Mount View followed suit, as the visitors matched their first- and second-quarter total with 11 third-quarter points, as Vogel, Roux, Thompson and Coolen netted field goals.

The fourth quarter was a battle as well, as the intensity picked up while the time ticked down, but tired legs seemed to set in for the Mustangs, after Thompson, the team's talented 6-foot 3-inch center, left with an injury earlier in the second half.

Searsport picked up the pressure, and went on a team-scoring barrage to net 18 fourth-quarter points, many coming in the final four minutes, to pull away to victory.

The Waldo County squads next will participate in regional playoffs.

Mount View will fill the fifth seed among sixth teams in the Kno-Wal-Lin (Knox-Waldo-Lincoln county) COVID Basketball Tournament. The Mustangs will play at No. 4 Boothbay Region by Friday, March 5.
