Cold, late-winter weather was not about to stop SeaHorse Stables from hosting a special fundraising event on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Downeast Medal Finals started more than 12 years ago as a small, three-person adventure to improve the sport of riding in Maine, and made it attainable for every rider with scholarships from businesses, said Amy Miller, SeaHorse Stables owner.

On Feb. 27, SeaHorse Stables held a "Footing FUNdraiser Horse Show," with Brooke Austin from Lucky Clover Farm in Sanford, as judge.

East Ridge Stables from Charleston also braved the windy, snowy weather to join SeaHorse Stables.

Between class fees, donated food and raffle basket from MIPR Corp. in Damariscotta, the horse show raised $2,033 towards the new arena footing.

Downeast Medal Finals held its first September finals horse show more than 12 years ago at the Skowhegan Fairgrounds with about 55 riders and three dedicated professionals operating all aspects of the show.

"Their mission was to expand the sport of riding within the state of Maine," Miller said.

In 2019, there were 152 numbered riders from the New England states.

"A lot of time and effort goes into raising scholarship monies from local business in order to make horse showing more attainable for our Maine riders," Miller said. "As the years have gone on, it has become necessary to replace the footing in their schooling ring."

Thus, a couple of area farms, including SeaHorse Stables in Belfast, decided to help with the fundraising.
