Construction on Wight Street senior housing developments is underway. Developers Collaborative and Realty Resources are building affordable senior housing facilities across the road from each other at 75 and 80 Wight St., respectively.

Developers Collaborative's development is to have 21 one-bedroom apartments and four studio apartments for individuals who will receive low-income state housing vouchers through the company's program.

The development is nearly halfway done, according to Laura Reading of Developers Collaborative. She said Penobscot Co. should be finished with construction by June.

Machias Savings Bank recently announced it is an equity investor in Realty Resources' 24-unit development. The over $1.9 million investment is the bank's effort to help fill a need for affordable senior housing in the area, it said in a Feb. 18 press release.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Altmaier said the project is expected to be finished by mid-September and the company will start taking applications Sept. 1.

The projects garnered mixed reactions from residents when they were announced in 2019, but received full support from the City Council.
