Maine game wardens are searching for a suspected drowning victim on Swan Lake using sidescan sonar in an area of the lake where a camp owner discovered an overturned kayak and some personal belongings.

Christopher N. Friedrich, 41, of Springfield, Oregon, was reported missing to the Waldo County Sheriff's Office by his girlfriend around 4 p.m. June 8. Working with the Sheriff’s Office, game wardens were able to locate a camp owner who had seen a kayak floating upside down on the lake Sunday morning. The kayak was later traced back to Friedrich, and Friedrich’s vehicle was located at the Swanville Boat Launch. Friedrich's last contact with family members was Saturday evening, June 5.

Currently, the Warden Service dive team is searching an area approximately a half-mile north of the boat launch on Swan Lake. Warden Service spokesman Mark Latti told The Republican Journal June 10, "We are still out there searching and plan to continue searching throughout the day today."

When asked about people commenting on Facebook who said pictures show Friedrich had an urn around his neck in a photo possibly attempting to spread someone's ashes, Latti could not confirm that was the case, only saying, "we found some personal items."

"It is tragic," he said. "Anytime anyone drowns is tragic."
