STANDISH — With the school’s baseball team, which retained its regional title hours earlier across the way and cheering for it, the top-ranked Searsport softball team looked to claim its own postseason hardware on Wednesday night, June 16 in the Class D South championship against No. 6 St. Dominic Academy of Auburn.

And, like so many opponents before them, the Saints had a devil of a time solving Viking pitcher Ana Lang.

Coming off a no-hitter where she struck out 20 of 21 batters in the semifinals, Lang followed that performance with another masterpiece as the Vikings clinched their first regional championship in 23 years with a 7-1 victory at St. Joseph’s College.

With the win, Searsport (12-6) advances to the state Class D championship game, where it will face top-seeded and Class D North champion Ashland on Saturday, June 19 at noon at Coffin Field in Brewer.

Ashland (17-0) defeated No. 8 Southern Aroostrook of Mars Hill 12-6 in the quarterfinals, No. 5 Machias 14-7 in the semifinals and No. 2 Stearns of Millinocket 8-7 in the regional final.

No. 1 Searsport bested No. 5 Buckfield 4-1 in the semifinals and No. 9 Greenville 13-1 in five innings in the quarterfinals.

St. Dom’s, which defeated No. 3 Vinalhaven 9-1 in the quarterfinals and No. 7 North Yarmouth Academy 8-7 in the semifinals, saw its season conclude at 8-10.

Saturday will be Searsport’s first state championship berth since 1998. The Vikings also made the state finals in 1997, 1993 and 1978, all in Class C, winning in 1998 and 1978.

On Wednesday night, Lang spun a one-hitter in the pitching circle for Searsport as she walked three — all in the fourth inning — and struck out an eye-popping 19 batters. In fact, she struck out the side in every inning but the fourth.

Through three postseason games, Lang allowed only three hits — including one no-hitter — and struck out 52 batters.

Dean also had a strong pitching performance for St. Dominic as she yielded six hits and one walk, with 12 strikeouts.

The Viking offense was led by Greeley (2 runs), Nadeau (single), Alley (run), Lang (2 singles, run), Gent (2 runs), Spiegel (single, run), Kronholm (run), Samantha Perkins (single) and Kyla Perkins (single).

Dean had the lone hit and run for the Saints.

Searsport scored one run in the first inning, five in the third and one in the fifth, while St. Dominic plated its run in the fourth.

The Vikings got started in the first when Greeley drew a walk, stole second base then moved to third on a bunt single by Nadeau that came to rest just inside the first-base line.

Greeley drew a walk for the Vikings, Lang then ripped an infield single to plate Greeley, as Nadeau and Lang moved into scoring position on a throwing error before the next two batters struck out to end the inning.

The wheels came off the Saints’ bus in the third inning when they committed five errors, which directly led to five Searsport runs.

Greeley reached on an error to start the inning and stole second before Alley reached on an error and Lang’s single loaded the bases.

Gent hit a hot shot to third, but the throw to the plate was wide, which allowed Greeley and Alley to score and put Searsport ahead 3-0.

Moments later, Spiegel reached on an infield hit after the third baseman went to the plate for the out, but the catcher did not apply the tag. Lang retreated to third base, which reloaded the bases.

Two more runs came in moments later on errors and an RBI-single by Kyla Perkins gave the Vikings a 6-0 lead.

The Saints manufactured a run in the fourth — without the benefit of the hit — as Dean helped her own cause as she drew a lead walk.

Dean stole second base and on the throw, the ball trickled into center field, which allowed Dean to come around to score.

St. Dominic made Lang work in the inning with three of the batters drawing 3-2 counts and eventually free passes, but Lang got out of the inning after Dick hit a hot shot up the middle that Lang snared out of the air for the final out of the inning.

Samantha Perkins added an RBI-single in the seventh inning for the Vikings.
