Greetings, Brooks. Looks like summer is here, and there’s a lot to report!

Brooks Garden Club

The lilies are going in! Garden Club members have planted about 300 thus far at the Historical Society and the Varney Building. Many thanks to those who participated. More are coming (to go in at other sites), so please contact me if you would like to help. We also plan to have some for sale at various locations — more information coming. The proceeds will benefit our nonpprofits. Pricing is $4 per plant or three plants for $10. I want to stress that these are well-rooted, exotic colored plants — not orange “ditch lilies.”  We’ve had purples, pinks, rose, violet, white and cream so far.

Brooks Historical Society

The public is invited to the Brooks Historical Society “Welcome Back Open House” on Sunday, June 27, 1-3 p.m. The Pilley Museum and Menard Barn will be open with many new displays and artifacts. I heard something about popcorn and lemonade, too.

Chicken Barbecue

Unity American Legion Post 50 is sponsoring a chicken barbecue Sunday, June 27, and will be serving from noon until gone. Dine in or takeout. The event will be held at 108 Windemere Lane in Unity. Price is $10 per meal and includes a half-chicken, barbecue sauce, baked beans, roll, chips, dessert and beverage. Sounds like a great deal.

‘Come Home to the Park’

July 3 is almost here. Events begin at 9 a.m. at the Brooks Community Park, 24 Community Drive. Crafters, vintage cars, food vendors, antiques, children’s games, Holly the DJ and FIREWORKS! Vendor space is still available. Contact Karen Hudgins for more information and an application (but hurry) at 722-3056 or kahudgins60@gmail.com. Tables are $25 per space and you can buy barbecue tickets for $12. Please plan to attend. The Community Park is an excellent resource for the town and the newly formed Rec Department is working hard to bring it back to a great, usable space for all of us to enjoy.

Ralph’s Cafe

The cafe remains open from Friday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mask requirements have been dropped (all staff are fully vaccinated) and reservations are no longer being taken. Feel free to continue to wear a mask if that’s what you are comfortable doing. They are still looking to hire dishwashers, so drop by and talk to Mike. Heat pumps have now been installed! The dining areas should be very comfortable during hot weather.

Until next time … peace.
