As schools wind down, the federally funded Summer Meals Program will kick in with meals for kids available for pickup in local schools and some town offices around Waldo County and adjacent areas.

Officially known as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program, the program reimburses local operators that serve free healthy meals and snacks to children and teens in low-income areas. The program was established to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session.

Summer meals are available for pickup in the following area schools:

In Regional School Unit 71, meals are available Monday through Friday through Aug. 31 at Belfast Area High School, 338-1790; Troy A. Howard Middle School in Belfast, 338-3320; Capt. Albert W. Stevens School in Belfast, 338-3320; East Belfast Elementary School, 338-3320; Kermit S. Nickerson School in Swanville, 338-3320; Ames Elementary School in Searsmont, 338-3320; and Gladys Weymouth School in Morrill, 338-3220. Call for times.

In RSU 20, meals are available M-F through Aug. 31 at Searsport District High School, 322-0991, and Searsport Elementary School, 322-0991. Call for times.

In RSU 3, meals are available M-F through Aug. 20 at Mount View Elementary School, 568-4607; Walker Memorial School in Liberty, 589-4208; Unity Elementary School, 568-4607; Troy Central School, 948-2280; Morse Memorial Elementary School in Brooks, 722-3636; and Monroe Elementary School, 525-3504.

In RSU 12, which includes Palermo, meals are available M-F through Aug. 13 at China Primary School, 763 Lakeview Drive, South China, 445-1550.

Meals are available M-F through June 30 at the Ecology Learning Center, 230 Main St., Unity, 230-9275.

Meals are available at the Jackson Town Office, 730 Moosehead Trail, 568-4607, on Wednesdays through Aug. 12. Breakfast and lunch are available from 10 to 10:30 a.m.

Meals are available at the Waldo Town Office, 629 Waldo Station Road, 568-4607, on Wednesdays through Aug. 12. Breakfast and lunch are available from 11:30 a.m. to noon.

In RSU 22, meals are available M-F through Aug. 27 at Hampden Academy, 862-3543; Samuel L. Wagner Middle School in Winterport, 862-3543, with breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Meals are available M-F through June 30 at the Frankfort Town Office, 48A S. Main Road, 862-3543.

In RSU 25, meals are available M-F through Aug. 20 at Bucksport High School, 949-6830; Bucksport Middle School, 949-6830; G. Herbert Jewett School, 469-6644; and Miles Lane School, 469-6666.

Meals are available at Edna Drinkwater School in Northport, 338-3430, through June 30.

In the town of Lincolnville, meals are available on Saturdays at Lincolnville Central School, 763-3366, through year-end.

Summer pickup times have not been published on the government website for many locations; families are advised to call the contact numbers for more information.
