BELFAST — It may not have been the regular season in the dead of winter, but short of the weather it felt like it on Monday, July 12 as Waldo County high school teams from Belfast and Mount View mixed it up on the basketball court in summer league play.

The Mustangs galloped away from the Lions in the second half and secured a 71-42 victory in a game that featured the debut of new BAHS varsity coach Carroll Harris.

The 65-year-old Harris replaces Marty Messer, who guided the Lions seven seasons.

“[I’m] thrilled to be back at it,” Harris said. “Enjoying the fact that they gave me an opportunity to work here. I’m going to do my best to try to get some good spacing and get the boys playing some good basketball.”

Harris is no stranger to the hardwood as he has coached a bevy of boys basketball teams throughout the Pine Tree State since the 1980s, including stops at Easton, Washburn, Deer Isle-Stonington and Limestone. Harris coached the Washburn Beavers to a state Class D championship in 1990.

He also was a manager and later an assistant coach at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and most recently coached the men’s team at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor in 2012.

Overall, he has 17 years of varsity coaching experience, 16 of which came in the men’s/boy’s ranks.

Harris also graduated from Washburn High School in 1974 and, after time in the United States Marine Corps, went on to graduate from the University of Maine at Presque Isle in 1985 with a degree in mathematics and chemistry.

He admitted after Monday’s game he and the team are “very unfamiliar.”

“We’ve only had two full practices,” he said. “So the boys are learning what I’m doing and obviously we’ve got a ways to go. But we’ll keep at it.”

Harris resides in Bryant Pond, but plans to relocate to the Belfast area in the coming months. He also has a boat charter, Greensleeves Sail Charters, which runs out of Northeast Harbor.
