LIBERTY — A new takeout shack with a commanding view of Lake St. George is poised to fill the cravings of travelers along Route 3, including boaters, beachgoers and locals alike.

Munro’s Lakeside Takeout, located across from the public boat landing, opened Saturday, July 10, under a brilliant summer sky.

Co-owner Paul Munro said he had been working with Al Baker of “Loon-Ey Snak Shak” fame as a partner at the same location when Baker decided to sell the business after experiencing health problems. Munro, along with his wife Kathy, said they finalized the purchase July 5 and have been busy getting the shack ready to open.

The whole Munro family, Kathy said, is pitching in at the shack except for the two little ones. “I’m sure we can find some tables for them to clean as well,” she added. Munro is no stranger to the food industry, having worked as a chef for 11 years at Point Lookout and also having owned Mt. Battie Takeout in Camden for three years.

Munro said he wanted to pay homage to a former “lakeside” restaurant that had been located at the same location many years ago by incorporating lakeside into the new name.

The menu, he said, has been revamped along with a new price structure. The menu consists of cold and hot sandwiches, salads, seafood sandwiches and baskets. Munro’s also offers a kids menu.

Lobster was dropped from the menu because it is too expensive at present. “I want to pass the savings on to the customers and I can’t do that right now,” he said, though he plans on having them as specials from time to time.

“It’s not a competition,” he said referring to the number of available places to eat now in Liberty. “We’re just a friendly community family restaurant.”

Several picnic tables are available to eat outside and a deck with Adirondack chairs provides a good spot to kick-back, take in the view, and have a bite to eat.  “It’s beautiful out here,” Kathy said. “We’re working on getting more seating so people can enjoy the view.”

The Lakeside Takeout will be opened seasonally from April 15 until Oct. 31, depending on the weather, Munro said. Kathy quipped, “So we will be open Tax Day to Halloween?”

“Yeah, why not,” he said. Munro’s Lakeside Takeout is open Monday, Thursday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
