BELFAST — Michael Moore Reid, 71, died peacefully at home July 12, a2021, fter what he called “a long contretemps with cancer.” Michael was born Feb. 5, 1950, in New York City to Barbara Moore Walker Reid and David Benedict Russell Reid.

When he was 12, he and his mother moved from New York to Sharon, Conn. In the woods and fields surrounding their home, Michael expanded his great love for the natural world. After graduating from The Buckley School and The Choate School, Michael earned his bachelor’s degree at Bucknell and Syracuse universities. He taught fifth and third grades at Dutchess Day School in Millbrook, N.Y.

In 1978 he married Yvette Hergenroeder. They had one son, Adam. They moved from Sharon to Islesboro, where Michael founded Rabbit Corner Woodworks and sailed his beloved Rozinante. His hand-crafted Windsor chairs were so traditional that a collector enthusiastically proclaimed them to be authentic antiques.

Long after being divorced, Michael married Lane Fisher in 2012. When after-effects of cancer treatment and back pain made it difficult to sustain physical work, he volunteered at the Drinkwater School, captured extraordinary images of wildlife, especially birds. and cared in countless ways for his wife, their property and their dogs.

Michael will be remembered by friends as a kind and compassionate man who spoke his truth and had an incisive wit. Passionately protective of wild creatures, he would stop his car to move a turtle or frog off the road. He played guitar and knew folk music inside out. A heavy drinker as a young man, he was proud of having been sober for his last 32 years. Michael was a hermit by nature, but took surprising risks and never quit growing as a human being.

He is survived by his wife; son, daughter-in-law, Brigitte, and grandson, Anders, of Alfred; two half-sisters in England, Frances Heywood of Crowborough, East Sussex, and Sonia Everly of Newbury, Berkshire; and five nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be scheduled in late summer. Gifts may be made to Pope Memorial Humane Society in Rockland.
